Online Tutoring vs Home Tuition: A Guide for Singapore Parents

27 Oct 2026

Not all online tutoring platforms are the same. Some are marketplaces where tutors create their own profiles and offer their services directly to families. Others are managed services with their own recruitment processes and teaching standards. The difference matters when you are choosing support for a primary school child.

Here are five things worth looking for before you commit.

1. Qualified teachers, not just tutors

The word "tutor” covers a wide range of people. A university student, a subject enthusiast, a recently retired professional and a qualified classroom teacher can all describe themselves as tutors. A qualified teacher, however, has specific training in teaching children, planning appropriate lessons and adapting explanations when a child does not understand something the first time.

The first question to ask any tutoring website is whether its tutors are qualified teachers or what teaching experience and qualifications they have. For primary English and maths, a teacher who understands the curriculum, child development and the expectations for your child's age can provide valuable support.

2. Safeguarding and recruitment checks

Online tutoring often involves a child working directly with an adult over video, which makes safeguarding an important consideration.

Look for providers who carry out appropriate background and safeguarding checks, interview applicants before accepting them and have clear procedures for safe communication with children online. If a website does not clearly explain its recruitment or safeguarding processes, it is worth asking what checks are in place before booking.

3. Consistent feedback after every session

A tutoring session your child attends without you in the room can leave you wondering what they covered and how they are progressing.

Regular written feedback can help close that gap. Ideally, updates should tell you what was covered, what went well, where your child may need further support and what to practice before the next session. That keeps you informed and helps you see how your child is progressing over time.

4. Lessons that match what the school is teaching

Tuition is most useful when it complements your child's learning rather than simply working through a generic programme. Look for tutors who understand the curriculum your child is following and can adapt their teaching to your child's current level, strengths and areas where they need more support.

For children at British curriculum international schools, that means tutors who understand the National Curriculum for England, know what is expected at each year group and can provide support that complements the learning taking place at school.

5. A trial before you commit

A trial lesson can be a useful way to find out whether a tutor and teaching approach are right for your child before making a longer commitment. It gives your child a chance to meet the tutor, experience the format and see how commfortable they feel learning with them.

When comparing providers, check whether a trial or introductory session is available and what the commitment looks like afterwards.

At Primary Tutor Project, all tutors are UK-qualified primary teachers who have been personally interviewed. Sessions include written feedback after every lesson, align with the British primary curriculum, and a trial is available before you book a block. Find out more at Primary Tutor Project.
