If you're a qualified teacher living in the UAE and looking for online tutoring work, the process is more straightforward than most people expect. The two things that matter most are your teaching qualifications and your legal position in the country. Get those right and the rest follows.
This post covers what Primary Tutor Project looks for in applicants, and what you need to know about the UAE's private tutor permit before you start.
Do you need to be a qualified teacher?
Yes. Primary Tutor Project works only with qualified teachers. The roles available are in KS1 and KS2 English and maths, teaching the British primary curriculum to children based internationally, including across the UAE and wider Middle East.
If you hold a UK teaching qualification and have experience teaching primary-aged children, you are the right fit. If you are a teaching assistant, graduate or tutor without a teaching qualification, Primary Tutor Project is not the right application for you at this stage.
What the application involves
The application process at Primary Tutor Project is straightforward. You submit your details through the Apply to Teach page, and each applicant is interviewed personally before being accepted. The company follows safer recruitment practices, so be prepared to discuss your experience and approach to child protection online.
When you apply, it helps to be clear about your availability. Primary Tutor Project works with families across different time zones, so the hours you can offer are relevant from the start.
Do you need a UAE private tutor permit?
This depends on how you work. If you are teaching through a UK-based company like Primary Tutor Project as a self-employed contractor, the position is different from someone offering private lessons independently to local families.
That said, if you live in the UAE and provide any form of private tuition, including online sessions, it is worth knowing that the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) operates a private tutor permit scheme. The permit covers both online and in-person tutoring, and the application is free.
According to MOHRE guidance reported by Gulf News, the permit is valid for two years and is available to registered school teachers, employed residents, unemployed individuals and students aged 15 and over. Applications are processed within five working days.
If you are a registered teacher or employed elsewhere in the UAE, your employer will need to provide a no-objection certificate (NOC) as part of your application. Required documents typically include your academic degree, a good conduct certificate, medical fitness evidence and a valid Emirates ID. You also sign and upload MOHRE's Code of Conduct as part of the process.
Anyone tutoring without a permit in the UAE risks significant fines, so it is worth sorting this out before you take on any private work, regardless of which platform you use.
What equipment do you need?
Primary Tutor Project lessons run via video call using an interactive whiteboard and screen sharing. You need a reliable internet connection, a working camera and microphone, and the confidence to teach interactively online rather than simply talk at a screen.
The ability to keep a primary-aged child engaged in a live online session is a genuine skill in itself, and it is one of the things PTP looks for when interviewing applicants.
